All Change for The Planning System?

Radical change might be in the air as Boris Johnson’s government turn its attention to reform of the planning system. One of Downing Street’s special advisors is Jack Airey, co-author of the radical report, ‘Rethinking the Planning System for the 21st Century’, published January 2020, which proposes fundamental changes to the planning system to make it much easier to build.
The report suggests broad zones around every settlement in which development would be acceptable in principle. It makes the case that the planning system should be reformed to prevent endless debates about the best location for development and, instead, refocus on infrastructure provision and good design. The government will publish its proposals for altering the planning system in its White Paper on Planning in the next few months. We wait with interest to see whether it is as radical as its special advisors are suggesting.
