How to be a successful retailer?

With the level of risk in the retail sector there have been some interesting views published recently that comment on the key skills required if a retailer is to succeed in such a dynamic environment. In the past retailing was a relatively easy way to start a business and to turn a quick profit. However, the uninitiated can come up against pretty formidable challenges today and should take some precautions in order to give themselves the best chance of success.
It is very important to understand who your client base will be and to provide them with an experience that they will want to repeat. It could be the way goods are presented or the way the showroom is lit or smells – small touches – that will show customers you have thought through who they are and what is important to them. It may be more fundamental, as in the location of your store or the hours of opening but much consideration should be given to who your customer is.
Building and retaining a strong team is crucial. They should share your vision, be passionate about delivering a first class service and qualified to fulfil the function assigned to them. In return for their commitment you should be considerate to their circumstances and support them as best you can.
Of course, the vision must be clear. Focus on it and build your brand values around it. Be consistent and stick to your plan wherever possible.
Finally, be grateful to your customers. Show them they are special and they are far less likely to look elsewhere in future.
